I'm Hillary Grant, a graphic designer based in Seattle.
In designing an album cover for David Garrett’s Legacy, I chose to treat the instrument as the main subject, rather than Garrett, who’s youthful good looks and long blonde hair are the usual focal points stressed by his marketing strategists. Legacy is Garrett’s interpretation of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major, op. 61, so I art directed a photograph by Kaylyn Beauprey that conveyed reverence, passion, and a sense of deep history.
The pillars of type on either side of the violin represent a comparison between two masters, Garrett and Beethoven, who are facing each other across time, communicating through this beautiful and compelling music.
